VLIZ, VITO and River Cleanup joined forces with INSPIRE, a European pilot project that tackles plastic pollution in rivers in an innovative way.
River Cleanup is launching a database of smart solutions and practical tools to reduce plastic waste. The database offers concrete tips to avoid, reduce and recycle single-use plastic.
Encouraged by River Cleanup, over 300 volunteers took care of the banks and waters of the Brussels Canal and 87 cleanups are underway in 33 countries.
In July 2021, exceptional rainfall caused the Vesder and Ourthe rivers to overflow. Three years River Cleanup volunteers are taking action one last time. 240 cleanups later, the job is completed.
January 2024, we visited Bandung to confirm the location to test the Clean River Model. Team Belgium joined Team Indonesia's activities and they discussed the implementation of the Clean River Model.
The Waste Watchers project engages citizens to use drones to photograph the river Scheldt's banks. AI then detects where the litter is located. This VITO and River Cleanup project is a world first.
